This card's effect that Special Summons a "Salamangreat" monster from your hand and Link Summons a "Salamangreat" Link Monster using the first monster as a material is the effect that applies by activating this card. (It does not target, and cannot be activated during the Damage Step.)
When this card resolves, you Special Summon 1 "Salamangreat" monster from your hand. Immediately after this card resolves, you must Link Summon a "Salamangreat" Link Monster using monsters in your Monster Zone as the materials, including the monster that was Special Summoned by this card's effect.
If you do not have an appropriate "Salamangreat" Link Monster in your Extra Deck and cannot Link Summon it by applying this card's effect, this card cannot be activated.

This card's effect that returns a "Salamangreat" Link Monster in your Graveyard to the Extra Deck starts a Chain. (It targets 1 "Salamangreat" Link Monster in your Graveyard. Banishing this card from your Graveyard is the cost to activate this effect.)
